Hillar Aben is CEO of GlasStress Ltd. and also Head of the Laboratory of Photoelasticity of the Institute of Cybernetics at the Tallinn University of Technology. His main professional activity has been related to the development of the technology of photoelastic measurements and to residual stress measurement in glass. On this topic he has published more than 100 scientific papers and two books: 1) Integrated Photoelasticity (McGraw-Hill, NY, 1979), 2) Photoelasticity of Glass (co-author C. Guillemet, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1993).
Under his leadership at the Laboratory of Photoelasticity original automatic polariscopes AP for residual stress measurement in hollow glassware have been elaborated. These polariscopes, manufactured nowadays by GlasStress Ltd., are used in many glass companies over the world.
Newest product of GlasStress Ltd. is polariscope SCALP, which is meant for through-the-thickness stress measurement in architectural glass panels and in automotive glazing.
Hillar Aben is a member of the Society for Experimental mechanics (USA), Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik and European Mechanics Society. He has been elected a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, Finnish Academy of Technology and European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
