Author Introduction

Arne Roos

Uppsala University

Arne Roos is a professor in Solid State Physics at the Angstrom Laboratory, Uppsala University in Sweden. He is currently a member of the organising committee of the International Conference on Coatings on Glass (ICCG) and also a member of the Technical Committee number 10 of the International Commission on Glass (ICG), dealing with optical properties of glazing.

Roos is currently supervising 3 PhD students who work with solar energy related aspects of windows and window coatings. The studies include optical properties of glass and coated glazing products and how to calculate the energy performance of windows in different buildings and climates. The work has to a large extent been carried out within international collaborative projects such as the International Energy Agency, Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, Task 18 and Task 27, and the EU-funded projects ADOPT, THERMES and WINDAT. Roos was coordinator for the ADOPT project dealing with angular dependent optical properties of coated glazing products.

After his PhD in 1983, which was about solar absorber coatings, Roos was involved in measurements and modelling of light scattering from interfaces and the development of low emissivity coatings based on titanium and zirconium nitride. Roos has published about 90 papers in international journals and presented results at more than 60 conferences, mainly solar energy related work and work on optical characterisation and optical measurements.

The presentation at this conference is about how different coatings on glass can be used to optimise the performance of energy efficient high performance windows.
