Dr. Vallabhan received his Ph.D degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas in 1966. His speciality was application of finite element and finite difference methods to solve complex problems in engineering. His research work has been published (more than 100 refereed papers) in various national and international journals. In 1975, he started nonlinear stress analysis of window glass and has published more than 45 refereed publications on glass in International Journals and Proceedings of International Conferences. He has modelled window glass with complex boundary conditions and extended his model to include dynamic loads. He was the pioneer to analyse Insulating Glass Units (IG units) subjected to lateral pressures by a mathematical model to compute the load sharing between the plates. He has also studied the effect of edge fixity conditions in glass that is normally ignored in glass design. Later, he modelled Laminated Glass with a PVB interlayer, a problem which is unique in nonlinear mechanics and extended his model to analyse Laminated Glass of arbitrary shapes and boundary conditions. For his outstanding research on glass for the past 25 years, the GPD- International conference on Architectural Glass confered upon him "the outstanding life achievement award" in June 1999 in Tampere, Finland. Besides, he has received various prestigious awards from International conferences and Texas Tech University.Besides these he has taught at many distinguished universities such as Technical University, Vienna, Austria , Mid-East Technical University, Anakara, Turkey, University of Kerala, Trivandrum, India and University of Cochin, Cochin, India the last one as a Fulbright scholar. Besides, he has taught short course on Finite Element methods in CSIRO, Melbourne, and CSIRO, Sydney in Australia. In United States, in Ford Motor Co, Detroit, Michigan, US Army Corps of Engineer, Omaha, Nebraska etc.
