In the last decade, glass structures have found their increasing use in modern buildings. The design optimization and robustness requirement of the glass components have attracted great attention in both architectural and engineering communities across the world. Understanding the structural performance of glass components with differing shapes and various loads are crucial to ensure the safety and reliability of building design. In this work, the deformation and stress of glass beam and plate will be analyzed, and a strength criterion will be proposed on the basis of the Weibull modulus and minimum failure probability. Finite element simulations will be carried out to investigate the stress and strain in glass components with various shapes. Special attention will be paid near the connecting. Due to the material property of glass material, i.e. high compressive and low tensile strength, a non-symmetric strengthening and design approach will be proposed to improve the robustness and reliability of glass structure in building.
