Variable Light Transmission - Laminated - Thermochromic Windows Free of Wired control systems

Millett, Fred

Progress is reported on the development of Sunlight Responsive Thermochromic (SRT) windows made using polyvinylbutyral (PVB) sheet with thermochromic additives and sunlight responsive window structures. SRT windows tint to various levels based strictly on the directness of sunlight and thus enable variable transmission windows without wires, power supplies, and electronic controls. SRT windows provide energy savings due to both increased daylighting and decreased heat load. Pleotint’s thermochromic PVB sheet enables glass laminators/fabricators around the world to add a dynamic, energy saving, variable tinting, high performance option to their fabrication business using existing lamination techniques. In addition to improved daylighting and lower energy bills for HVAC, SRT windows will reduce carbon emissions, increase comfort, decrease fading, and provide other PVB laminate attributes such as increased impact protection and sound reduction.
