Paint systems for solar mirrors

Piet De Vos

Developing a paint system to be used on solar mirrors is not an easy task as some difficult specifications have to be fulfilled. The loss of reflective energy should be less then 1 % in a 20 years period as well as the surface reflectivity should not go down by 1 % (due to corrosion on the surface or borders). As most solar plants are built in desert areas also the abrasion of sand towards the paint layer should be very good. As the specifications of this type of mirrors are not set yet, we have to define our own tests to simulate 20 years of outdoor exposure. These new tests include : - Multiple CASS-test, salt spray and humidity tests - Thermical cycle tests - Sand abrasion tests - UV Resistance test (QUV) - Weatherometer (WOM) tests.
