As photovoltaic industry expands, it is critical to select suitable material and process solutions to meet the numerous requirements including durability, efficiency, cost, throughput and global availability. Silicone materials are well known for their demonstrated stability to moisture, UV-radiation and extreme temperatures. They are therefore excellent material choices for outdoor performance and opto-electronic applications, such as LED encapsulants or electronic protection. Due to their low modulus and low glass transition temperature, silicones are recognized for their stress-relieving characteristics over a wide temperature range. Thanks to their low moisture absorption and good dielectric properties, they provide the required protection and electrical insulation. Liquid dispensed process allows continuous in-line processing for very high-throughput production. In many applications, their fire resistant properties are also important. This review will focus on the unique properties of silicones that make them ideal products for the entire PV module assembly including frame bonding solution allowing enhanced mechanical strength and encapsulation solution with improved durability, transparency and throughput.
