Energy efficiency - A global problem

Dr. Helmut Hohenstein, Dr. Hohenstein Consultancy

Tremendous growth in specific markets like China, Russia and now India and the whole Far East urgently needs best practise in energy efficiency specifically for insulating glass and facades. Hereby health and wellbeing as well as comfort and convenience have to be considered as key factors. Efficient standards, regulations, building directives and funding schemes can do a lot to push the right development. Daylight utilisation and sun protection, natural ventilation, shading technologies as well as energy gain, for instance through solar cells and photovoltaic technology, should be considered regarding the different climatic areas as safety functions in the same way which are all more or less combined with highly efficient Insulating Glass technologies and suitable sealing systems.

Undoubtedly, very good IG has the biggest impact in energy efficiency in buildings and can be implemented relatively easily even in the given building stock. They can easily be implemented in facades, not only for new buildings but also for renovation purposes, and thus giving the world the chance for a huge saving of energy.

Multifunctional facades and windows using energy efficient insulating glass is one of the main tasks in the future for developing countries. This process has to be supported by governmental rules and international standards.

Huge savings can be reached by applying high efficiency, long lasting IG units: As an average China could save up to 21 % of all energy consumed in buildings. This is possible only by using the best technology of Insulating Glass with highly efficient Low-E-coatings and durable multifunctional sealant systems based on relative economic prices.
