Strengthening Technique of High Strain Point Glass by Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

Mizuki Nishi, Yoshinori Akamatsu, Shinji Nishikawa & Kentaro Tsutsumi, Central Glass Co., Ltd.

High strain point glass is generally used as a glass substrate in a Plasma Display Panel (PDP). As a panel size becomes larger, it should be important to make a glass substrate thinner without decreasing mechanical strength, in order to reduce total weight of a large PDP.

Recently, a new strengthening technique of soda-lime-silicate glass by forming heterogeneous phases into glass by femtosecond pulse laser irradiation has been reported. We are trying to apply this technique to high strain point glass that is a practical substrate in a PDP. Furthermore, we are investigating the characteristic of heterogeneous phases formed into a high strain point glass.
