Measuring the delaminating energy in laminated safety glass

Uwe Keller, Kuraray Specialities Europe GmbH

A novel and simple test method is presented that allows the direct measurement of the delaminating energy for poly vinyl butyral (PVB) glasslaminates in the dynamic range relevantto an impact event. The results obtained highlight the critical role of adhesionin laminated safety glass for its ability to absorb kinetic energy and provide a better understanding how interlayer thickness and tear resistance influence the penetration resistance of laminated safety glass of a given glass thickness.
