Coatings with Nano-Particles for Windows and Façades

Helmut Hohenstein

In the last couple of years nanoscience, the understanding and the processing of materials on an atomic or molecular scale, has revolutionized the scientific world. Primary applications of interdisciplinary nanotechnology in the field of surface coatings have shown extremely promising results, and have also led to individual products. A range of innovative companies is offering various new products, especially in facade design, which have to stand the test of time in everyday application. Catch-phrases such as self-cleaning, lotus- or bionic-effect, all of which are based on an understanding of structures on the nanometer-scale, some of which are modelled on natural phenomena, have become widely known. Only after the complex interactions have been analysed and researched in detail can universal solutions of the various problems of nanolayered surface coating in the field of windows and façades become successfully established as an innovative leap in the market on a large scale.
