New optical interference method for remote non contact gauging of flat glass and glass articles is introduced. The application of the method to in-line gauging of float glass in hot zone (beginning of lehr) is considered. The advantages of interference method are shown, and the apparatus for such gauging is described. The optical properties of float glass essential for interference hot point measurements are examined, and the practical limits for precision of interference gauging are estimated. The experience of operation of interference gauging systems at the Bor Glass Works (Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia) shows efficiency and reliability of the systems. New possibilities for control and optimization of the production process given by precision non stop hot point gauging are discussed. The applications of new method for diagnostics of laminated glass and glass articles of complex shape are demonstrated, and the possibilities of in-line gauging in the float bath are discussed.
