For several years work has been conducted at the architecture faculty of Delft University of Technology to develop novel glass based composite structural elements. One of these elements is a beam designed as a structural element for roof constructions. At the fifth glass processing days in 1997 a proof of concept for such a composite beam was shown. This has been further developed into a prototype that is an efficient structural element with high transparency and a unique failure mechanism that provides structural safety.
