Stress Measurement, Fragmentation and Mechanical Strength - A Review of Test Results According to EN 12150:2000 and EN 1863:2000

European Standards for thermally toughened soda lime silicate safety glass, EN 12150-1, and for heat strengthened soda lime silicate glass, EN 1863-1 were both published in the first half of the year 2000. These Norms describe the conformity requirements for products: tolerances on dimensions, flatness, information on edge works, holes and notches and physical characteristics, including fragmentation and mechanical strength specifications.

During the last four years an intensive experimental work has been conducted at the Glass-in-Building Department of SSV, to investigate the correlation between the permanent stress of heat treated glass and its fragmentation behaviour in accordance with EN 12150-1 and EN 1863-1, and mechanical bending strength evaluated in accordance with EN 1288-3. From the results of these tests, carried out using more than 800 specimens coming from 20 different production plants, good correlations have been found. A relationship between the surface compression and fragmentation characteristics has been established, with more satisfactory results for toughened clear float glass. A good correlation has been found between the surface compression and mechanical strength, taking also into consideration the influence of coating. Also the correlation between edge compression and edge breakage stress has been investigated.
