Harald Biel, WOLFF+MEIER Isolierglaswerke GmbH & Co. KG
About three years ago, we saw ourselves as glass producers increasingly confronted with these three problems in logistics and material yield:
1. Our customers were demanding logistic pre-sorting of their glass orders (for example, the bundling of whole orders), as well as precise information as to rack, order and loading sequence (which sheet was located on which rack).
2. The orders arrived at ever shorter notice, requiring us to react to ever quicker turn-around times.
3. Rising glass prices demanded better optimisation methods to increase our material yield.
Only with time-consuming search and manual sorting in our shipping department were we in the position to satisfy our customers’ wishes. Quick turn-around times and optimum material yield were a conflict in terms. To uphold our aims for quick delivery we were forced to make economic sacrifices – and accept poor material yield.
