The edge quality of a glass is one of the most important factors affecting the glass resis¬tance. Other study presented during previous GPD has investigated this relationship considering the effect of Ion-exchanging and the effect of cutting and finishing on the strength of different glass thickness.
In this manuscript we’ll present the results of the test performed on glass samples of the same thickness (5mm) normal and tempered, with four different finishing of the edge. It will be shown that, from the resistance point of view and for the tested glass (5mm thick¬ness), the higher strength for the normal glass are obtained with the edge only grinded with peripheral wheels, while in the case of tempered glass the higher strength are obtained with polished edge.
It will be explained a possible interpretation of these results analysing the type of cracks created during the grinding. Using Weibull analysis also the design strength of glass for various edge quality and ther¬mal treatment is calculated.
