Definition and Classification of a Quality Measure for Ground Edges

Hans Gfeller, Rolf Pfiffner and Alexander Stapf

A basic necessity to optimise the grinding process is a quality measure for ground C-edges. By applying this measure to a representative sample of manufactured edges, process modifications can be performed to increase the actual value of this measure and thus the whole grinding process. So far the judgement of the quality of the grinding process has more or less been done by experts inspecting the ground C-edges qualitatively.

BYSTRONIC in co-operation with several automotive glass producers has defined a simple quantitative quality measure for such edges. Basically the number and size of the edge chippings within a pre-specified length of the ground edge are determined. However, since the proposed quality measure is based on quantitative measurements, it can be evaluated by an automated equipment. The structure and functionality of this system as well as its range of application is also presented.
