Shattering Old Myths About Defect Formation in Laminated Glass

Factors contributing to the formation of defects in automotive laminated glass are critically examined. Traditional views are often inconsistent with data from fundamental studies. Excess air in the windscreen can play a much more important role than might be expected with respect to delamination. Methods for directly measuring the effectiveness of air removal in a vacuum-bag pre-press system and for simulating the vacuum-bag process are described. Tests for ascertaining the defect formation tendency of a laminate are also described.
