Due to the growing demand for protection
against vehicle crimes, the need for security
glazing is increasing rapidly. It has been
recognised that an improvement of the side
glazing area is of highest importance. Since
generally no modification of the door construction
is permitted, security sidelights with a limited total
thickness are required. Sekurit Saint-Gobain
responds to these needs with laminated sidelights
of various structures in order to provide different
security levels at total glazing thicknesses being
compatible to standard products.
The security performance of these products is
investigated with respect to different isolated
failure mechanisms and with new test methods
investigating the over-all performance of a glazing
mounted to a vehicle door. For both cases,
results are discussed for glass-plastic composites
comprising different interlayers and glasses of
various thicknesses. Finally it is shown that the
construction of the window frame has also a
strong influence on security performance.
