A Study about Passenger Side Air-bag System against Windshield

Toru Takabayashi, Michio Mitsuhashi and Hideyuki Okuhara

Recently, a lot of problems with passenger side
air-bag system have been reported. We studied
about the windshield puncture by a passenger
side air-bag attacking and tried to find out
the mechanism of problem. We analyzed the
phenomena of windshield break in the barrier test,
especially the case of plastic interlayer (called
P.V.B) tear. We studied both of mechanism and
material science, and tested the effect of pre-crack
by using our experimental equipment. We
found out the most important points as follows;
1) Adhesion between glass and P.V.B affects the
resistance of laminated glass against air-bag
pressure.
2) When a windshield has pre-crack on the
surface, probability of P.V.B tear increases.
