Shaping PVB interlayer to match the curvature
of a complex screen produces aesthetic and
economic benefits which are attractive to
laminators in the automotive glass industry.
Originating as a small volume batch process for
speciality screens, shaping technology has
developed to embrace the continuous production
demands of high volume OEM screens.
Careful control of the shaping process is
essential to preserve the key properties of the
PVB interlayer - adhesion, surface pattern and
dimensional stability. Highly curved screens
require rigorous design to correctly position the
shade band while maintaining caliper control.
This paper reviews the range of shaping
techniques available for both ARG and OEM
segments, describing the process variables and
how they can be controlled. Finally the latest
developments in the supply of preshaped PVB
are presented - opening up a “make or buy“
option for windscreen laminators.
