Multi-Layer Technology for Sound and Solar Protection - The First PVB Interlayer with Combination of Two High Performance Technologies

Jiro (Joe) Miyai, Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd.

Automotive glazing is required to perform various functions such as comfort, safety and environmental protection. In order to meet these market demands, PVB interlayer for laminated glass now plays a much more important role, especially for adding some very high value performance traits in one glass product. In this paper, the combination of two high performance technologies is presented as a superior solution for achieving one glazing with two high value functions. Multi-layer technology of PVB interlayer was developed as a superior solution for optimizing sound attenuation performance to the maximum level by having different functions in the outer and inner layers (“Function-by-layer” concept). On the other hand, nano-dispersion technology was also developed and applied to IR cut-off PVB interlayer for solar control performance. By combining these two new technologies, the two most desirable functions (sound and solar protection) can be brought together in one PVB interlayer and in one glass product without losing any performance they already have. Multi-layer PVB technology will expand the possibilities of high performance automotive glazing.
