Large central cutting lines are state-of-the-art in production of insulating and architectural glass. The glass is handled horizontally and a lot of space is required for intermediate storage and sorting resulting in long in-plant distances. This kind of production involves highly complex logistics, planning and optimisation.
In this paper a more flexible and efficient solution composed of the storage device "feeder" and the vertical cutting line "smart verticut" is presented. The focus of this system is a new logistical concept that improves the overall production process rather than optimising single production steps only.
This decentralised cutting solution reduces the cost of logistics and glass handling as well as clearly improving the production order while minimising the glass waste.
An important feature is the subplate-wise cutting that allows a more flexible production order and therefore reduces the sorting effort and storage space for different glass qualities.
The planning and optimising software is linked directly to the line control forming a highly dynamic system that results in a short reaction rate as it is important for express orders or in case of broken panes.
