In this study glass composites of different glasses containing nanocrystalline NextelTM filaments are
described. The usefullness of special single (C, SnO2, TiO2, BN) and double (C/SnO2, BN/TiO2) fiber coatings, deposited by CVD, to enhance the fracture toughness is investigated. The single (C, BN) and double (C/SnO2, BN/TiO2) layers prevent intermingling of filaments and matrix during hotpressing and enable fiber sliding or crack deflection for the fracture energy dissipation. A combination of enhanced fracture toughness and optically translucency was achieved for a N-SK4/TiO2/BN/ Nextel 440 composite.
