The Critical Relationship Between Glass Surface Quality and The Tempering Rollers

Mr. Ren Bartoe, Vesuvius

The author discusses the critical physical and chemical properties of fused silica ceramic rollers used in the horizontal heat-treating process for safety glass. Those properties coupled with the care and maintenance of rollers and the operating parameters of the tempering furnace are directly associated with glass surface quality.

In horizontal glass tempering processes, the ceramic rollers are in intimate contact with the glass and can affect the resulting surface quality. With today’s evolving glass products and coatings, roller quality is more critical than ever before.

Understanding critical roller properties, specifications, and operating parameters is key to roller life and performance and ultimately glass quality and productivity.
