A new method to strengthen glass edges by CO2 laser irradiation was investigated. Several methods of glass edges processing by CO2 laser have been reported. However, these methods need preliminary heating of glass substrates to avoid from thermal fracture, which was caused by large temperature difference between an irradiated edge and surrounding area.

We found a promising way to make glass edges round by irradiating CO2 laser without any preliminary heating. The 4-point bending strength of the glass with processed edges by this method showed similar to that of a glass with clean-cut edges.
