Glass usage and functionality in today’s automobiles have increased dramatically from what was
typical in vehicles produced only 20 years ago.
This paper will give an overview of recent developments and future trends in automotive glazing that
have been brought on by changes in automotive design, styling, assembly, and safety requirements.
Included will be discussions on trends and factors that have influenced the amount and type of glass
utilized per vehicle, the degree of complex shaping, the type of edge quality, and the integration of value-added
function. The implications of such trends on current manufacturing processes will be explored,
and technology advancements needed to improve capabilities will be presented.
