Automobile Windshield with Built-in Thin Film Multilayer System for Head-Up Display and Sunshield Use

F. C. Ho, Y. Tsou and R. Jan

An optical combiner, designed by optical interference coating technology, was deposited on the upper part of the windshield of an automotive vehicle for head-up display and sunshield use. The multilayer system, prepared by reactive sputtering process, reflects the interior information display of the vehicle by 85% while reduces sunlight penetration to 25%. From the color performances of the displayed images and
the efficiency in sunlight blocking, the optical combiner was proved valid as versatile head-up display unit for automobiles and other transportation vehicles as well.
