Heated Coated Windshield : the Future of High Performance Iris Coating

Etienne Degand, Cédric de Kerchove

The introduction of the 42 V network in the coming years gives opportunities to new technologies: Heated Coated Windshield, based on the Iris anti-solar on glass coating, will be a leading technology.

Using the metallic layers of the coating, 42 V power supply enables the windshield to dissipate more than 1000 W / m², through Joule effect. This leads to an efficient defrosting and demisting. A description of the product structure is provided, including its heating performances, and all aesthetic and safety characteristics.

Relation between windshield dimensions, coating resistance and dissipated power is explained. A special feature is discussed: how to combine tollgate windows and the heating function, in order to achieve homogeneous defrosting speed.
