Endurable water-repellent coated layers have
been formed on safety glasses for automobiles via
sol-gel based spray coating process. Coated films
are composed of a silica underlayer and a fluoro-carbon
layer in which the formed silica shows
definite surface roughness and acts as the
enhancement factors for chemical and mechanical
durability. Durability is the functions of the degree
of surface roughness, structural fineness and
homogeneity. Dual stage aging in silica sol
controls wide range of surface roughness. Water-repellency
can be degraded gradually with the
accelerated combination of sunlight, water, and
abrasion. Spray coating on the large size and
curved shape of safety glasses was successfully
carried out.
