The European Commission's Task Force Car of Tomorrow and its Relevance to the Glass Processing Industries

David Miles

Urban pollution, congestion, noise... all are driving forces in vehicles which fit into the transport
systems of tomorrow. The Car of Tomorrow Task Force brings together all the RTD activities in the Fourth
Framework Programme which contribute to its objectives. These are to contribute to the research and
demonstration effort necessary to develop clean, safe, efficient, intelligent and affordable vehicles. In
conjunction with all the stakeholders, an agreed set of targets have been identified together with the
associated RTD priorities. These will be set in the context of the energy regulations and other incentives
for cleaner transport. The developing role and activities of the Task Force will be considered together
with its priorities for the 5 th Framework Programme. For the glass processing industries the challenge is
to meet the demand for affordable glazing products which have the necessary structural, insulating and
low-weight characteristics. Other applications, such as traction cell separators, may also become more
important.
