Evolution of High Performance Environmentally Friendly Automotive Glass-Ceramic Enamels

George Sakoske, Barry Reinherz, Gerhard Tünker

High performance automotive glassceramic enamels have evolved to meet and exceed industry challenges. Ever more demanding technical specifications for regional and global requirements must be understood and qualified. Improvements in fired film physical properties include opacity, scratch and abrasion resistance, color, adhesive bond strength, chemical durability, glass substrate strength, silver bleed through resistance, and silver solder adhesion. Functional performance during manufacturing is also critical as automotive glass forming processes become faster with more severe bends. Environmental initiatives regarding heavy metals and recycling also continue to shape and challenge the industry.
