Generating the majority of its volume from the automotive and residential glass markets, the float glass industry is run primarily as a commodity business. The "third wheel" to the automotive and residential glass markets in terms of size and influence in the float glass industry is the architectural glass market. It could be argued that the nature of float glass production is at odds with the architectural glass industry in that the market desires architectural glass to be a very customized product, rather than a commodity.
