A Critical Review of Impact Testing and Classification of Safety Glass for Use in Buildings

The merits and limitations of existing and proposed impact tests for safety glasses are critically reviewed in relation to minimising injuries resulting from accidental human impact. Performance based criteria are outlined for the selection of glass for use in buildings. Results of recent impact studies in three countries have revealed significant differences in test results between the traditional lead shot bag impactor and a new proposed twin tyre impactor. Changes to the performance based criteria for laminated and toughened safety glasses are recommended for consideration and implementation by standards bodies and legislators.
