The idea was to produce a very low cost glass block with thermal insulating properties from broken waste glass that could be a safe infill for gabion walls.
The experiments that Ian Ritchie Architects carried out in 1993 were a direct result of being invited to compete for Glasbau Seele's proposed new factory in Germany (which we subsequently won) and an awareness of the existing European glass mountains.
