Environmental Risks of Architectural Glass Without Durable Surface Protection

Stephen Byers

Glass is so often taken for granted that the risks of specifying or supplying architectural glass without durable surface protection may not be properly considered. This situation is rapidly changing because it is increasingly recognised that - like other materials of construction such as metals or concrete – glass is exposed to the causes of surface degradation if not protected against the chemical and physical enemies described in this paper.
Architects and designers specify glass because of its excellent performance qualities and its versatility, knowing that glass is a high maintenance material of construction requiring frequent washing. Even with frequent washing, however, glass that is not protected against its enemies is susceptible to surface degradation. The unprotected glass becomes increasingly diffi cult to clean and keep clean – losing its original visibility, clarity and cleanliness.
This paper describes the reasons why glass specifi ers and suppliers have duties of care and attention to ensure that glass surfaces are protected against degradation before, during and after construction.
