Some Steps in the Methods of the IGU Characteristics Calculation Evolution

Partially new calculation methods for the optical, thermal and strength characteristics of the insulating glass units are described in this paper. These methods take into account operational and climate factors acting on IGU in Russian environmental conditions.

We calculate IGU’s parameters in severe climate by means of combined solving of all three problems simultaneously: determination of optical, thermal and mechanical characteristics. These problems are interrelated because the IGU shape depends on surrounding air temperatures, wind, atmospheric pressure etc. All estimated characteristics are depended from IGU shape and so on. Additional complexity is that thermal and optical performances have to be calculated on the assumption of average conditions of winter and warm period (for example, mean temperature of the coldest or warmest 5-day period) but mechanical properties must be calculated from the most unfavorable combination of the extreme winter and summer conditions (for example, high pressure and minimal surrounding air temperature during winter or low pressure and maximal temperature during summer) for every region of IGU application. Moreover we found that sealants and gas properties are poorly analyzed under low temperature conditions.

Based on the drawn research we developed our own software used in OAO “Glass Institute” and Moscow City Building Codes projects which describe calculation of optical, thermal and strength characteristics of the insulating glass units.
