Warm Edge – Making the Right Choice!

Johnny Holm, Rolltech A/S, DK-Hjørring

Increasing energy costs and international efforts to reduce ecologically harmful emissions result in a growing demand for thermally optimized windows. Improvements of insulating glass by using glass with low emissive coatings and gas with a low thermal conductivity are now followed by the establishment of so called warm edge -spacer bars, which reduce the heat losses at the insulating glass edge.

Several warm edge-solutions have been developed in the last years. To evaluate a warm edge product performance it is necessary, to judge not only the thermal properties, but the mix of four requirements: 1.) thermal bridge reduction, 2.) ease of handling and processing, 3.) resulting insulating glass quality and 4.) economic efficiency.

The paper discusses on the four requirements and their effect to warm edge product performance evaluation.
