The Performance of Hot Melt Butyl Edge Sealants in the Forthcoming Harmonised European Standard for I.G. Units

Katherine Higgins

The performance of hot melt butyl edge sealants in the forthcoming European Standard, prEN 1279, is discussed in comparison to sealants based on polysulfide, the most established polymer technology for insulating glass.

Data will be presented to demonstrate the ease with which both dual and single sealed units, produced with hot melt butyl, pass EN 1279 -2:2000.

The relationship between unit construction and moisture penetration indices achieved in this test is explored.

Excellent results have also been achieved in the gas leakage rate test, EN 1279-3 : 2000, and these are reported.
