As the market shows the necessity for fast, on-time deliveries to the customers, the degree of
automation can heavily influence the manufacturing costs and therefore its efficiency. A fully automated
and integrated insulating glass production line with cutting, sorting and automatic assembling as well as
sealing of units raises the following questions:
a) What degree of automation can justify the investment
b) Is it necessary to install the latest state of the art
c) How efficient is the organisation from the order intake to the delivery schedule
d) How much does it improve on lead times or will it transfer labour from the factory shop floor into the
office.
e) How much will it influence the flexibility in production terms
f) How much will it influence the production through-put per line or per plant
Many of these questions have to be allocated and information will have to be summarised just to
enable a verification on which type or size of machine should be used. The prospect for a guideline that
also included the practical aspect of different production circumstances and requirements is the key
aspect of future investments.
