Effect of nickel sulfide inclusions on spotaneous hardened glass breaking

V.F. Solinov, OJSC “NITS”

Before showing the influence of defects in the form of NiS inclusions on the glass strength it will be good to remind that there are two principal concepts about the mechanism of glass breaking – mechanical and kinetic. The first concept formulated by Griffiths being most popular among the foreign scientists considers the following. In real glass there are surface microcracks of certain length; overstress may develop in most dangerous microcracks under the influence of applied internal or external stress which leads to their growth and glass cracking.
