Performance of IG Sealants Based on Liquid Polysulphide Polymers

Sealant properties, their performance and
durability are dependent on the type of the base
polymer and on the sealant formulation. Liquid
polysulphide polymers have been used as base
products for the manufacture of IG sealants for
more than 40 years. Tailor-made product types
have been developed for this application by
optimisation of the polymer structure to meet the
wide variety of requirements demanded by the
manufacturers of the sealants as well as of the IG
units. The dependence of important processing
sealant properties, such as rheological and curing
behaviour, on the structure of liquid polysulphide
polymers (end-groups and branching) is shown in
this paper.
Commercially available polysulphide IG sealant
compounds have been evaluated to illustrate the
special advantages of polysulphide polymers with
respect to their processing and sealant properties.
