New Architectural Standards for Laminated Safety Glass in Practice

Holger Stenzel, Kuraray Specialities Europe GmbH

In recent years, laminated safety glass (LSG) for architectural applications has become more and more standardized. While national standards dominated at the start of this process, today European and international standards prevail.

This paper describes the main European standards for LSG. The fundamental test methods are visualized. The basic standard for laminated glass and LSG is EN ISO 12543. It is supplemented by EN 12600, which describes the impact behaviour by the pendulum test. EN 356 describes the testing and classification of the resistance of security glazing against manual attack. High-performance bullet- and blast-resistant glazing are standardized in EN 1063 and EN 13541.

This paper also presents results for several LSG structures and provides information about designing LSG to fulfil certain requirements.

A comparison with American and Asian standards is given.
