PVB Blends with Lanthanum Hexaboride for use in Laminated Solar Control Glazing

W. Keith Fisher, Solutia Inc.

Since nanoparticles can provide spectrally selective light absorption with minimal scattering, they can be used as additives to laminated glass interlayer to reduce solar heat gain. Dispersed lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) nanoparticles have resonant light absorption in the near infrared so they are useful in reducing solar heat gain through glazing while maintaining relatively high visible light transmission. The spectral characteristics, visible light scattering, solar heat gain and spectral absorption coefficient as a function of LaB6 nanoparticle concentration is presented. Performance characteristics of PVB interlayer containing LaB6 with both clear glass and tinted glass are considered. Laminate temperature profiles are calculated using a finite element energy balance procedure for each laminate layer. A physical model to describe the spectral characteristics of this system is proposed.
