Shear-Strength of Glass Panel Elements in combination with Timber Frame Constructions

Peter Niedermaier

The fragmental material glass increasingly accomplishes load-bearing tasks besides the previous or traditional physical functions in the building area. The use of shear-stressed glass panels in light-weight timber frame constructions requires the clarifi cation of the bearing capacity as well as of the constructive connection to the timber frame. One possibility is the direct gluing of shear-stressed glass panels onto the timber frame construction. In this presentation the bearing capacity and the deformation behaviour of shear-stressed glass panels are described and relevant infl uence parameters are explained for use of structural stiffening timber-glass-constructions. In addition, tests are explained which describe the load-bearing capacity during usage and in the case of failure. From this, effects on the dimensioning of shear-stressed glass panels can be described.
