Shear Stiffness of the Interlayer in Laminated Glass

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Sobek, Dipl.-Ing. Mathias Kutterer, Dipl.-Ing. Rolf Messmer

The basic mechanism of shear-transfer through
the interlayer in laminated glass units and its
favorable influence on glass-stresses and
deflections is well known. However, the time and
temperature dependancy of typical interlayer-materials,
such as PVB, which is the essential
parameter of the sandwich-mechanism, has not
completely been described until now. The main
point of this research is, therefore, a detailed
determination of the shear stiffness of the
interlayer. With the presented calculation values
for secant moduli, a simple and safe foundation
for the economic and realistic design of laminated
glass is available. Many critical design problems
can be rapidly solved on that basis by using the
theory of sandwich mechanics.
