Methods of composite glass materials quality and strength testing

Rodichev Yu.M., Maslov V.P., Bodunov V.E., Yevplov Yu.N.

Strength of laminated glass and new composite glass materials depends on glass structure element surface state as well as on strength of different adhesion bonding materials. As a result of technical progress in glass processing technique the high strength glass (bending strength up to 150...200 MPa) and adhesives (adhesion strength up to 50...100 MPa) are used and new nonstandard methods must be developed to guarantee the workability of advanced bearing structures. Inhomogeneous distribution of the local quality and strength parameters at the different part of composite components is their grave disadvantage and it must be considered at the technology and design development.

The control of laminated composite glass quality based on experimental methods of linear fracture mechanics for glass element strength estimation combined with new methods of adhesion strength testing are the basic components of nonstandard integrated methods which are discussed at this paper. Special incised specimens made of real glass composite units and blanks and appropriate test procedure for series diagnosis of strength and fracture parameters were developed. These methods give a possibility to evaluate the local glass surface quality and adhesion strength at the different parts of adhesion layers particularly near the edges and holes where glass and joint strength decreasing and exfoliation are the cause of element fracture.

The minimization of specimen sizes and testing procedure cost as well as the simplification of test methods and technique were provided for reduction of material and financial expenditures. The influence of low (up to – 196˚C) and high temperatures (up to 1000˚C) as well as of the different loading conditions on the test results was considered. These methods may be used at the development of new composite glass and glassceramics material as well as at the fracture examination of building, automotive and special engineering glass structures.
