New technology for panoramic roof glazing

Cynthia Kirschner, DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions

The appeal and demand for sunroofs in the automotive industry continues to grow rapidly worldwide. The latest significant market trend is the incorporation of large “panoramic” sunroofs. These sunroofs can measure over 1.5m2 each and may be comprised of either fixed glazed panels, movable glass panels, or even a combination of both, all resulting in an open, airy feel for even the smallest vehicles. However, such large panels of glass create certain challenges for vehicle and glazing designers and manufacturers.

This paper will discuss the latest technology for performance improvement of panoramic roof systems through the use of glass/plastic laminates made with PVB/PET composites. Laminates with this construction offer significant performance benefits over standard, monolithic tempered glass or glass/PVB/glass laminates. The physical properties and functional characteristics of the different glazing constructions will be compared, along with the benefits and limitations of each.
