Problems of Technological and Constructional Strengthening of Glass for Architecture and New Fields of Glass Industry

Glass is a most brittle material among
constructional materials, which are used in
technique. So problems of optimal glass and glass
units strengthening, which are connected with
new trends in architecture and guarantee of
competitive advantage of glass over competing
materials are very important now. This report gives
a critical analysis of known and new methods of
technological and constructional strengthening of
glass, which are not wide used in architecture and
perspective fields of glass industry yet.
Scientific fundamentals of optimal projecting
of strong glass components and structures
according to strength and safety, technical
and economical criteria are expounded. Use of
combined strengthened glass technologies,
perspective impact strong glass-polymer, glass-metal
and pre-stressed structures, as well as
utilization of high compressive strength will give
a possibility to make glass constructions safer,
easy and more effective under different thermal
and mechanical loads.
Some new methods, which are used in aircraft,
transport industry, as well as in shipbuilding,
underwater and rocket technique may be utilized
for glass constructions and for new fields of glass
industry.
