New Tempering Technology and Inspection Methods

Several factors have recently affected the field
of glass tempering. Not only has the tempering
process itself been a major driving force for the
tempering industry, but also such factors as
increased, global competition facing all the
players in the marketplace; customers requiring
higher quality products; new quality standards
and safety glazing regulations; newly-created,
non-destructive inspection methods which are
replacing the expensive, older methods; new
products brought to the market to meet the
demands of both automotive and architectural
industries; and finally, new products introduced
by tempering machinery manufacturers to
respond to the heat-treating requirements of the
new glass products have all been essential to
today’s definition of glass tempering. All these
issues are discussed in this paper in order to
provide a complete picture of today’s tempering
technology. Suggestions are given to achieve a
brighter future for the tempering industry using
the new tempering technology.
